‘Home Alone’ House Sells for $5.5 Million, Slightly Over Asking
The iconic Chicago-area “Home Alone” house officially has new owners, Mansion Global has learned.
The traditional red brick house in Winnetka, Illinois, closed on Thursday for $5.5 million, slightly over its asking price of $5.25 million. The home was listed for sale in May of last year and found a buyer within a week of hitting the market, though it took more than seven months for the sale to be final.
“There was an agreement that the sellers would love the opportunity to remain in the home for one more holiday season,” the buyers’ agent Lori Nieman of @properties Christie’s International Real Estate told Mansion Global.
The facade of the Georgian-style home is easily recognizable to any fans of the 1990 Christmas movie classic—which stars Macaulay Culkin as the left-behind Kevin McCallister—as the home of the McCallister family. The home has even become a popular tourist destination for fans of the movie.
This is the first time in more than a decade that the home has traded hands. The sellers, who couldn’t be reached for comment, bought the house in 2012 for $1.585 million using a trust, records show. They were represented by Dawn McKenna of Coldwell Banker Realty.
Built in 1921, the home underwent an extensive renovation in 2018, adding more modern features—including an open kitchen, a home theater and an indoor sports court—while maintaining the architectural details of its “most recognizable spaces,” like the entry staircase that’s featured in “Home Alone,” according to a news release from Coldwell Banker Realty.
Nieman said the renovation work and the home’s architectural style were a large factor in her clients’ desire to buy the home.
“Like everybody else, they love the significance of the home and its place in cinematic history. They understand that and embrace that,” she said. “That said, the home and all the wonderful renovations and the expansion of the home also played into their decision.”
The home, which is roughly 20 miles north of downtown Chicago, is spacious at about 9,100 square feet. There are five bedrooms and six full bathrooms, and the upstairs primary suite features a gas fireplace, a walk-in closet and a bathroom with a free-standing soaking tub and dual vanities.
The property is located blocks away from Winnetka’s village center and the shore of Lake Michigan.
Information on the buyers was not readily available, as the sale has not yet hit records, though Nieman said they’re very excited to be the new owners of the “Home Alone” house.
“They want to be stewards of the home for a long time to come,” she said.
