Victorian in the Front, Glass in the Back: DC’s Iconic ‘Barcode House’ Is Listed for $1.65 Million

The iconic "Barcode House" in Washington DC's Dupont Circle has just hit the market for $1.65 million.

Nicknamed for its striking all-glass rear addition designed by architect David Jamieson, the 3,224-square-foot Washington, DC, townhouse offers a unique investment opportunity for the next buyer.

The opportunity comes from the layout: a three-bedroom primary residence sits atop a one-bedroom lower-level apartment, which could be used for multigenerational living or rented out for income.

“The combination of a quintessential Victorian in Dupont Circle with a modern extension is very unique to merge the two styles,” said Meredith Margolis, who is co-listing the property with Jennifer Touchette, both of Compass. “The front is all Victorian and the back is all glass.”

The "architecturally inspiring" interior boasts hardwood floors and stained-glass windows.

From a sculptural steel bathtub to a color-drenched bathroom, unexpected details can be found throughout the home.

Built in 1912, the residence still features many historic details, including custom millwork, built-ins, and multiple fireplaces.

"I think the next buyer will be someone who appreciates everything about Dupont living and has a love for something a bit different," she said. "It could also be someone who appreciates the architecture and the arts."

Modernizations include radiant-heated floors in the kitchen and den, two second-floor guest suites, a bathroom with Italian Bisazza glass tiles, and a third-floor primary suite with walk-in closets and a spa-inspired bath.

"There are three outdoor spaces for entertaining that include a balcony off the kitchen, an outdoor space upstairs, and a roof deck, which is really pretty," Margolis said.

The lower-level one-bedroom residence has a full kitchen and built-in storage, and is easily accessible from a back entrance.

While some homes nearby are currently used as secondary residences, Margolis believes this one will likely be used as a primary home.

"Dupont Circle is the center of Northwest, the center of the Red Line, and the epicenter of the district," she said. "It’s very accessible, close to Michelin-star restaurants on 17th Street, and is the home of sweet neighborhood businesses. There is a mix of these homes, condos, and apartments and we all live in harmony."
