Luigi Mangione was living in a luxury high-rise apartment building in Honolulu in the months before he was arrested and charged in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, it’s been claimed.
According to the New York Post, Mangione, 26, was living in a two-bedroom, two-bathroom corner unit in the building, at 801 South St. in Honolulu.
Property records reveal that the 979-square-foot space is owned by Peter and Nam Joun, who bought the apartment in 2021 for $745,000; however, sources close to the family told the Post that they were unaware Mangione was their tenant.
Rentals for the apartment are understood to have been handled by an external management company, with the owners having little to do with the day-to-day admin of the leases.
Mangione is said to have been living in the property since February, although it is unclear whether he was residing there alone or had a roommate. His exact rental costs have also not been confirmed; but similar two-bedroom, two bathroom units in the building are currently available for between $3,150 and $3,450 per month.

The building, which was completed in 2017, is home to 1,045 units spread across two 46-story towers. The apartment Mangione occupied was located on the 14th floor of one of those towers.
Mangione’s connection to Honolulu was first revealed after he was named as a person of interest in the case, with authorities revealing that, while he was raised in Maryland, his most recent known residences were in the Hawaiian city.
Reports about the alleged assassin’s high-rise accommodations come just one day after one of his former roommates spoke out to comment on his second-degree murder charges, voicing his “shock” over Mangione’s arrest.
Speaking to ABC 7 News, R.J. Martin, who lived with Mangione in a co-living space in Hawaii before he moved into the two-bedroom apartment, said that he was “beyond shocked” at the news, which he described as “unimaginable.”
Mangione, who is the heir to a Maryland real estate empire started by his multimillionaire grandather, Nicholas Mangione Sr., was arrested in a McDonald’s in Altoona, PA, on Dec. 9, five days after 50-year-old Thompson was shot dead outside a New York City hotel.
He was charged with second-degree murder in Manhattan, NY, as well as facing charges of unlawful possession of a loaded firearm and forgery.
Magione faced an extradition hearing in a Pennsylvania courthouse on Dec. 10, as prosecutors began the task of bringing him back to New York to begin the trial against him.

According to The Independent, Mangione’s lawyer, Thomas Dickey, told reporters that he has not “seen any evidence that he’s the shooter,” adding that his client plans to fight extradition.
“We’re going to fight this along the rules and with the constitutional protections that my client has,” Dickey said.
However, police confirmed on Dec. 11 that fingerprints found at the scene of Thompson’s assassination match his client’s, while NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch also revealed at a press conference that the 3D-printed gun found in Mangione’s backpack after his arrest match the shell casings that were discovered at the crime scene.
“We got the gun in question back from Pennsylvania … we were able to match that gun to the three shell casings found in Midtown at the scene of the homicide,” she said.
Mangione’s arrest marks a very dark twist in what once appeared to be a very bright future, beginning with his privileged upbringing in Towson, MD, an upscale suburb of Baltimore, where he lived in a picture-perfect family home with his parents, Louis and Kathleen, and several siblings.
The accused killer attended the Gillman School, which is considered to be one of the top private institutions in the area and where annual fees now run up to $37,690.
Mangione, who was valedictorian of his high school class in 2016, went on to earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating cum laude in 2020.

Meanwhile, his family was considered one of Towson’s most successful. Mangione’s grandfather, Nicholas, who died in 2008, worked his way out of poverty, eventually building a booming real estate empire that included country clubs, a radio station, and nursing homes, according to multiple reports.
The jewels in the crown of Mangione Sr.’s multimillion-dollar portfolio were his country clubs—the first of which, Turf Valley Country Club in Ellicott City, he purchased in 1978, according to the Washington Post.
Mangione Sr. and his wife, Mary, eventually built a 220-room hotel on the site of the club, which also boasted a conference center and expanded it to include a golf course and residential living.
He then purchased the Hayfields Country Club in 1986 and rebuilt it to become a thriving commercial enterprise.
His other businesses included Lorien Health Services, which the family is understood to still own, and WCBM-AM radio station.
He and his wife lived in a $1.9 million mansion on the grounds of their country club. Mary died in 2003, according to her obituary. Mangione Sr. remained in the home until he died five years later.
Meanwhile, Mangione and his family resided in a charming four-bedroom, five-bathroom home they sold in June for $865,000.
