Prepare, Northeast Homeowners: More Snow Is Coming After Historic Blizzard

by Dina Sartore-Bodo

As most of New Jersey and parts of Long Island, NY, dig out of 2 feet of snow, the forecast for the rest of the week brings news of even more snow on the horizon.

Thankfully, initial predictions don’t see significant snowfall. Then again, Winter Storm Hernando wasn’t expected to be such a heavy hitter either.

Meteorologists are reporting that snow will return to the Northeast as early as Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, with places like Poughkeepsie, NY, and Sussex, NJ, seeing 1-3 inches of snow added to their totals from Monday, according to NBC 4 New York.

While Central Park saw a record 19.7 inches of snow during the storm, it will be spared another major drop on Wednesday, with the immediate tri-state area only expected to get a dusting of snow.

“A quick moving system will bring snow to the area early Wednesday morning, primarily for areas near/north of the I-78 corridor,” the National Weather Service said. “The timing may lead to slick conditions during the morning commute.”

But the snow could be far from over even after that.

A double hitter after the blizzard

Another round of snow is possible Thursday night into Friday, though the timing and track of that storm remain uncertain.

As of now, forecasters are looking at a possible wintry mix with rain and snow coming to the wider Northeast area.

The good news is that, for some, by Saturday the temperatures will be up to 45 degrees, which will help melt the accumulated snow faster.

The bad news is that the long-range forecast sees flurries returning in the first days of March, according to the Weather Channel.

Homeowners should continue to monitor their local weather reports to ensure they’re prepared for what is to come, especially after the massive blizzard that hit New York and New Jersey this week.

Millions of people in New York City and the rest of the tri-state were stuck at home after the fierce winter storm slammed the region with heavy snow and high winds.

More than 2.5 feet of snow fell in some spots. Snowfall totals from the storm exceeded 30 inches in several locations across New Jersey and Suffolk County, Long Island, according to the National Weather Service.

The highest regional total may have been in Central Islip, Long Island, which recorded 31 inches. Other Suffolk County spots also saw 30 inches, including East Islip and Patchogue. Holbrook and Babylon reported at least 29 inches.

In New Jersey, two Bergen County towns surpassed 30 inches: Lyndhurst (30.7 inches) and Carlstadt (30.2 inches). Nearby, Leonia measured 29.7 inches, and Bogota saw 29.5 inches. Newark Airport received 27.2 inches of snow.
