Neil Patrick Harris’ Former L.A. Home Is Listed for $4 Million—After Landing Starring Role in ‘Oprah’s Next Chapter’

A Hamptons-style Sherman Oaks abode that was once famously owned by actor Neil Patrick Harris and his husband, actor and chef David Burtka, has returned to the market for $3.99 million—13 years after it served as the set for a very intimate on-screen interview between the couple and Oprah Winfrey.

Harris and Burtka picked up the home for $2.1 million in 2010, according to records, and two years later welcomed Winfrey and her camera crew through its doors to open up about their new roles as parents to twins Harper and Gideon, now 14, in an episode of "Oprah's Next Chapter."

During the interview, which took place largely in the backyard of the six-bedroom abode, Harris, now 52, and Burtka, 50, who wed in 2014, discussed the very difficult process of conceiving a child via surrogate—and how they were going to handle conversations about what it means to have "two daddies and not two mommies."

"They're super healthy and they're happy," Harris said.

"One thing I am so appreciative of that my parents did to us is talk to us like we were regular people. They didn't talk to us like we were little babies," he continued.

"We're going to tell them information, I want them to have information. I think the way that they were brought into this world was very unique and weirdly scientific, and the technology involved in it, I think is remarkable.

"But it came because we really, really wanted kids. We really had thought it through financially, emotionally, relationship-wise. We didn't just accidentally get pregnant and decide we need to make it work. These kids come into our lives with nothing but love."

The couple's Sherman Oaks abode would serve as their first official home as a family of four, before they offloaded at a profit for $2.99 million in 2014.

Since then, the 4,500-square-foot home has been passed on to new owners just a handful of times. It has retained much of its warm and fuzzy charm, while also undergoing some surprising high-tech upgrades that are sure to impress even the most discerning forward thinkers, according to listing agent Andrew Manning, with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties.

The current owners have outfitted it with smart home technology, with lighting, HVAC, appliances, and electronic devices controlled remotely by phone, computer, or mobile devices. They've added Enphase solar power, with Tesla backup wall batteries and a charging station, which cost an estimated $80,000, said Manning.

"It is a truly great family home," Manning told Realtor.com® just five days after the property was listed. "It has five bedrooms up and a potential sixth bedroom down, plus an amazing home office for up to four people. Also added an EV car charger. Truly a great home. We are already getting offers."

As it turns out, the listing now indicates that the property is under a "contingent" offer. This means that the seller has accepted an offer from a buyer, with both parties now fulfilling several conditions of sale before the deal can close.

Still, the home's quick sale just proves its lasting appeal, an allure that is no doubt aided by its A-list heritage.

As high-tech as the home may be, it still has the same elegant yet comfortable family vibe that Harris and Burtka added when they lived there with their twins.

Sadly, however, one of Harris' most famous additions did not survive the owners' renovations: his "Magic Man Cave," where he stored his top hats and wands and performed magic tricks.

But the home offers a number of well-appointed bonus rooms, including an intimate den, a yoga room with outdoor access and a dog door, and an office/homework room with four built-in workspaces situated in the home's signature turret.

The main-level layout is traditional, with a double front doors and a formal entry that leads to a staircase on the right and a step-down living room with a fireplace and two sets of French doors on the left. Hardwood floors and cream-colored walls prevail.

The main floor also features a formal dining room, also with French doors, and a chef's kitchen with a center island with prep space, a breakfast bar, and stainless-steel appliances.

Adjacent to that may be the most enjoyed room in the house: a comfortable family room where everyone can snuggle up and watch TV.

The home sits on a flat 0.29-acre lot in the leafy Stone Canyon section of Sherman Oaks. It's also "South of the Boulevard," referring to Ventura Boulevard, which is an asset when it comes to San Fernando Valley luxury homes.

The property is discreetly walled and gated and surrounded by mature foliage.

The current seller added an elevated swim-spa exercise pool, according to Manning. The backyard already featured a large saltwater pool and spa with a waterslide and an outdoor bath/shower.

Meanwhile, Harris and Burtka have since moved back to the East Coast, where Harris owned a stunning townhouse in Harlem, which he sold for $7 million in 2022.

In 2017, the duo had picked up a picturesque estate in East Hampton for $5.5 million, which is now understood to serve as their primary abode, providing them with plenty of privacy away from the hustle and bustle of New York City.

The extravagant property boasts more than 13 acres of land, which Harris has affectionately nicknamed "Funhouse Farm," while documenting his upgrades to the dwelling on his Instagram account.
