A midcentury modern masterpiece designed by the “rock star” of the architectural movement has been put on the market for $5.79 million—almost 40 years to the day after it was built.

Located in Los Angeles, the “steel-and-glass masterpiece” is the work of famed architect Pierre Koenig, who was known to many as the “rock star of midcentury modernism” and who built the dwelling as his personal residence.

The three-bedroom, three-bathroom property was originally built in 1985. However, it has recently undergone an extensive restoration at the hands of its current owner, Matthew Zehner.

“I wanted to honor Koenig’s original design while making thoughtful updates that enhance livability, functionality, and longevity,” he explained in a statement.

“Every decision was made with a deep respect for the home’s historical significance while ensuring it remains comfortable and efficient for modern living.”

Like many of Koenig’s properties, the home boasts an extraordinary amount of natural light thanks to the many windows that fill the dwelling.

Like many midcentury modern homes, the large windows flood the property with natural light. Yet its lush surroundings provide an incredible amount of privacy—even in its prime Brentwood location.

“This dramatic space, intersected by landings and staircases, is bathed in natural light from full-height clerestory windows,” the listing—which is held by Debbie Weiss at Compass—notes.

“This residence stands as a definitive expression of Koenig’s architectural vision, embodying the essence of modernist living. The home is extraordinarily private and serene, yet central to everything Brentwood has to offer.”

Zehner added that the home feels more like a “sprawling private compound” than a neighborhood dwelling.

“One of the most remarkable aspects of this home is how Koenig designed it to feel completely private and immersed in nature, despite being in the middle of Brentwood,” he explained.

“The large glass windows bring in incredible natural light throughout the day, eliminating the need for artificial lighting, yet the way the home is positioned makes it feel like a sprawling private compound rather than a house in a neighborhood.”

Known as Koenig House #2, the property has been historically archived and preserved by the L.A. Conservancy, cementing its status as one of the area’s most revered architectural gems.

However, according to Zehner, the home’s unique and awe-inspiring design still allows for comfortable living—and, he argued, could even enhance your day-to-day routine.

“I’ve always admired Pierre Koenig’s work, especially the iconic Stahl House, so the opportunity to live in a home he designed for himself was incredibly compelling,” he said. “But beyond its architectural significance, what truly stood out to me was how functional and livable it is.

“Many architecturally significant homes feel like trophy properties—stunning to look at but not always practical for daily life. This home is different.

“The layout is exceptionally well-configured, with a natural flow between rooms, incredible light throughout the day, and a design that feels both polished and effortlessly comfortable. It’s an inspiring space to be in—but also one you can truly live in.”

And it would seem that Zehner’s impressive review of the property has rung true for at least one buyer, as the home has received a pending offer after less than 20 days on the market, marking only the third time it will change hands in its 40-year history.

The property last came on the market in January 2024 for $4.99 million and was purchased by Zehner just 18 days later for $4.93 million.

Previously, the home had been listed only once before, in May 2017 for $3.79 million. It was sold for $3.46 million after just 57 days.
