Chynna Phillips Reveals She and Husband Billy Baldwin Are Living Apart—Months After Putting $3.9 Million Home on the Market
Chynna Phillips and Billy Baldwin are no longer living together, the Wilson Phillips songstress has revealed, just months after the couple put their Santa Barbara, CA, home on the market for $3.9 million.
The couple—who tied the knot in 1995—are trying out a unique new living arrangement that sees them each taking up residence in a different home to see if absence really does make the heart grow fonder.
Speaking about their new setup in a video posted to her YouTube account, Phillips, 56, conceded that some might find their decision “nuts.” But she insisted that she and Baldwin, 61, truly believe they are “on to something.”
She explained that the setup will see each of them taking up residence in one of their two homes. The couple, who share three children, own one property in Beverly Hills and another in Santa Barbara.
“Billy and I are working together to structure a living situation that works for us both. Maybe we’re nuts, but we think we’re on to something,” she shares in her video. “Billy and I are in this new kind of ‘arrangement,'” she says, using air quotes. It is “actually really working for me.”
Phillips admits that the move was her idea, explaining that she proposed it to her husband—who is the brother of actors Alec and Stephen Baldwin, and uncle to model Hailey Bieber—as a “test run.”
“Why don’t we just do a little test run to see what it feels like to have me in Santa Barbara and you in Beverly Hills, and then we flip flop,” she recalls suggesting.
However, the so-called arrangement doesn’t mean that the husband and wife never see each other. In fact, it’s quite the opposite.
They now see each other for regular “date nights,” as well as their couples’ therapy sessions, Phillips explains.
“In between [switching homes], we have double dates and we have date nights together, and we have, you know, therapy,” she says. They have also enjoyed “dinner with the children,” as well as trips to the beach and museum.
As for their sex life, Phillips—who is the daughter of The Mama’s and the Papa’s frontman John Phillips—jokes that the pair may end up scheduling conjugal visits, referring to them as “one of those visits.”
The idea, she adds, is to spend some quality time together while also enjoying some much needed space.
“We spend a few days a week in a row together where we have sleepovers and stuff, but not forcing ourselves to be subjected to each other’s energy 24/7,” she says.
‘Giving it a shot’
During her video, Phillips enjoys a FaceTime call with her husband, who she admits is finding their new setup a little bit harder to get used to than she has.
“I’m very happy with giving this a shot,” she says. “Billy is a little more reticent about the whole thing, but I think he kind of gets it at the same time. I think he’s like, ‘You know what, let’s give it a try.'”
However, during their call, Baldwin jokes that he’s “livin’ la vida loca” at their Beverly Hills property, noting that he’s been enjoying an array of activities since the pair began living apart.
“In your absence, I go to Penn State–USC football games, the World Series, I hang out with my children in L.A., like you do, too, and I’m pitching a new show,” he reveals.
He adds he’s getting his “ducks in a row” to line up projects with an eye to upcoming college loans due next year.
‘We cherish our marriage’
Phillips seems to think that their separate home stays have been working well so far, but makes sure to point out to viewers that the couple’s decision to live in separate homes is not an indication that they’re planning to split.
“I think that we’re on to something, I really do,” Phillips says. “We’re madly in love, and we don’t ever want to separate. We just need a little time apart because we’re an allergy to each other.”
Baldwin jumps in, “I think you have the allergy. I have a certain energy that gives you the allergy.”
Santa Barbara abode
This relationship swerve seems to have also derailed their plans from this spring to sell their Santa Barbara property. In May, the two had placed their three-bedroom, 4.5-bathroom home on the market with an asking price of $3,895,000.
Highlights of the main home include wide-plank oak wood floors, vaulted ceilings, 8-foot-tall French doors, and an abundance of windows.
The lush grounds include walkways, a circular driveway, a covered patio, and a grassy yard.
In a previous YouTube video, Phillips showed off some of their renovation work, including the open kitchen, built-ins, and fireplace mantel in the living room.
The couple, who purchased the place in 2021 for $2.9 million, were looking for an almost million-dollar upside. The abode dates to 1949, and they had renovated it from top to bottom.
Then in August, the home came off the market and was instead offered as a rental for $14,000 a month. It’s since been completely taken off the market, probably because Phillips and Baldwin have been splitting their time at both of their homes.
Phillips had previously showed off the 2,049-square-foot abode that she had renovated, top to bottom.
Set on a half-acre, the 1949 Craftsman combines “old world charm with modern amenities,” the listing notes. The space features a large home office with a balcony, and a one-bed, one-bath guesthouse that’s attached to a big garage.
The “spacious and fixable family compound” includes oak floors, a living room with a fireplace, a skylight, newer baths, and a kitchen remodel. The back of the house features a woodsy patio.
It is the perfect escape for the pair—or, these days, one of them—offering distance from the bright lights of Hollywood, where they have both been working for much of their lives.
Baldwin, who was born in Massapequa, NY, began acting in the late 1980s and has since amassed an impressive number of on-screen credits, including roles in “Flatliners” and “Backdraft.”
In addition to her music career, Phillips has had acting roles. in “Bridesmaids” and “Say Anything.”
